Three fibres, one honest comparison.
Cotton, linen and Tencel dominate woven apparel for good reason. But "sustainable" is not a single property — each fibre earns its claims differently, and each fails differently in wear.
When a designer asks us to compare cotton, linen and Tencel, the first thing we say is that there is no winner — there is a match. Each fibre rewards the products it suits, and punishes the products it does not. What follows is how they actually behave on the loom, in the dye house, and on the body.
Cotton — the reliable workhorse
Cotton is still the default for woven apparel, and for good reason: it weaves predictably, dyes deeply, washes well and ages gracefully. Within cotton there are real sub-species — compact yarns for sheen, slub yarns for texture, organic cotton (GOTS- or OCS-certified) and recycled cotton (GRS-certified) for sustainability programmes. - Strengths: predictable supply, deep dye uptake, softens with washing, strong certification infrastructure.
- Limits: creases unless finished, moderate drape, and non-organic cotton carries heavy water and chemical footprints.
- Best for: shirting, poplin, twill bottoms, canvas, and any programme where consistency matters most.
Linen — character you cannot fake
Linen is flax, and flax wears its honesty. The slub, the crispness, the way it softens over years — those are structural properties of the fibre, not finish tricks. In warm climates it outperforms almost everything for breathability and moisture handling.
- Strengths: exceptional breathability, distinctive texture, gets better with age, very strong fibre.
- Limits: creases readily (a feature for some, a bug for others), costs more per metre, and requires careful loom setting to control slub and neps.
- Best for: summer shirting, relaxed suiting, resortwear, table and home textiles.
Tencel (Lyocell) — drape and conscience
Tencel is the trade name for lyocell, a cellulose fibre made in a closed-loop process that recycles more than 99% of the solvent. It drapes like a man-made fibre while feeling natural, and its colour yield is exceptional — deep, saturated shades with low water use.
- Strengths: fluid drape, softness, low environmental footprint per kilo, excellent colour depth.
- Limits: creases in wear, can pill in loosely woven constructions, and needs controlled dyeing to avoid shade variation between batches.
- Best for: blouses, dresses, flowing trousers, athleisure tops, and programmes chasing drape at scale.

Blends — the pragmatic middle
Many of our best-selling programmes are blends because they fix the weaknesses of single fibres: cotton-linen keeps linen's character but improves crease recovery and cost; linen-viscose softens linen into a fluid summer suiting; Tencel-twill gives denim's structure with fluid drape. If your design sits between two rows of the table above, a blend is usually the answer.
Weave the fibre that matches the garment's job, not the fibre that matches the marketing brief.
